Presentation

The Graduate Program in Applied Chemistry (PGQA) of the Department of Exact and Earth Sciences of Campus I (DCET I) in the University of the State of Bahia (UNEB) offers an academic master’s degree; it was started in 2006 and is evaluated by Capes with concept 3. Between 2006 and 2020, more than 100 students completed the Program; these alumni are either pursuing their doctoral degree or working in institutions of high and higher education, as well as in various branches of knowledge in different cities in Bahia and in other states of Brazil.

Since the introduction of the PGQA, there has been a constant and significant improvement in infrastructure with the construction and/or expansion of laboratories, as well as with the acquisition of new analytical equipment. This has expanded the investigations in the program’s focus areas, rendered possible through financed projects by the funding agencies CAPES, FAPESB, CNPq, and FINEP, along with partnerships with UNEB’s own companies and financing programs such as PROPOS, AUXPPG, and PROPUBLIC. The goal is to consolidate research and postgraduate policy, resulting in academic excellence.

Objectives

Main objectives

The Graduate Program in Applied Chemistry at UNEB aims to train qualified individuals with a strong foundation in chemistry in traditional (physical, analytical, inorganic, and organic chemisty) and related areas. These individuals are working in different sectors and are capable of carrying out professional teaching and research activities with a social impact. The trained masters will be able to contribute to the generation of new knowledge by integrating teams of scientific and technological research. The Program also intends for the graduates of the PGQA to be able to occupy teaching positions in chemistry in high schools and universities.

Specific objectives

To train human resources to be able to work in companies and research centers in chemistry, and continue their training at the doctoral level to develop priority and strategic scientific and technological research that contributes to the scientific and technological development of Bahia and Brazil.

To train human resources to be able to work in teaching, research, and extension in chemistry, in both basic education and universities and federal educational institutes.

To encourage the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge through vehicles of national and international impact.

To carry out extensive studies with a view to developing new methodologies and analytical processes of an inter- and multi-disciplinary nature, aimed at determining the quality of food and drugs, as well as the composition of regional agroindustry products.

To carry out extensive environmental studies of an inter- and multi-disciplinary nature, aimed at improving the quality of water in rivers and the soil of various regions of the State of Bahia.

To carry out extensive studies with a view to develop new materials that can be used in different sectors with a scientific and technological impact.

To carry out extensive chemical, biological, and pharmacological studies with plants to develop new products with a technological impact.

To carry out extensive studies that are focused on the synthesis of inorganic compounds.

To constntly expand the program’s infrastructure by raising financial resources from research promotion agencies, with the aim of improving teaching, research, and extension conditions.

To contribute to the quality of basic education through the development of projects in collaboration with state schools.
